The two artists/writers who saw most deeply into the suffering nature of the modern age be Burroughs and selby jr…verily. Burroughs was the documentor of its control aspect while selby was the documentor of the psychological aspect of NPCs(seem). What Afronsky’s ‘requiem for a dream’ did that was quite extraordinary was to INVERT the metaphors of celebrity as ‘existential success’, and the core concern of Selby’s works(of spiritual nadir), by casting the most glamorous young actors of that era as its protagonists. Actors portraying success portraying the complete and utter human failures that are the majority of humanity.——By doing this the movie itself became a LITERAL MFing [[[EYE]]](by virtue of the cinematic medium). Ah…it only takes one😭…TBH I not actually watch this, I’m not the type inclined to inflict unnecessary violence and misery upon myself~ Just now as I was trying to decide which of the frames from the movie that was available on public image search engines to use, I was initially hesitant to use this image because it is clearly the most disturbing of the ones that were available and I didn’t want to go for pure shock value~. Part of what made me eventually decide to go with it though was in noticing that the actress portrayed a ‘why is this happening to me?’ expression on the actress’s face and that the image has a ultra high definition quality to it…which did made me die a bit inside…Not literally having been to hell ‘if it exists’ (that I can remember 👀…what.) I can’t help but deduce given my experiences so far of how the world and people are - …that it actually be like that.
